Leveled Reading Passages

You might have noticed that more and more of the VNG lessons include Leveled Reading Passages. These are reading passages that are aligned to the structured visual of the lesson. When students engage with these reading passages, they get exposure to finer details and a deeper understanding of the concept the visual depicts. At the same time, the visual serves as an anchor to help their reading comprehension.

The lessons that include these reading passages are designed according to the Talk, Read, Talk, Write approach (Motley, 2016). In these lessons, there are opportunities for small-group discussion both before and after students read. These lessons also present different versions of the reading passage: one on grade level, one below grade level, and one above grade level. You call tell which passage is which by looking at the shapes in the top-left of the reading passage:

  • Below grade level: the triangle is in the bottom left
  • On grade level: the square is in the bottom left
  • Above grade level: the circle is in the bottom left
